Orchids That Play Hard To Get
As with any form of life that can be identified and studied, orchids have been classified by scientists according to genotypical and phenotypical traits. What gets confusing is when plant taxonomists cannot reach a consensus over what constitutes a species or genus. Finer details of certain species or genus are subject to one's personal opinion.
With more than 30,000 known species worldwide, orchids are one of the largest category of flowers. Orchids exhibit an enormous degree of variation in size, shape, color, texture, and decorative markings.
Phal amboinensis 'flava'
The rarest albino variety of the Phal amboinensis orchid comes in 'yellow'. Even those that pride themselves on being expert orchid cultivators and collectors aren't aware of the existence of this truly rare orchid. This particular Phal amboinensis 'flava' 'David Lim' was discovered about 30 year ago. This particular species of phal amboinensis is a prime candidate as a stud plant for crossing and hybridizing to create green and yellow progenies. Progenies from such a heritage are destined to be award winners.
The smallest and easily the rarest orchid of all, is the Phal appendiculata (flower is about 10mm in size), which was earlier believed to be extinct. After being discovered for the first time, not much has been heard of this orchid for decades, leading many to believe it was extinct. It is a must for orchid breeders and collectors who aspire to breed and cross Phalaenopsis species. Although the germination rate of this orchid is relatively low, the reward is well worth the wait.
The phal speciosa varieties tetraspis is another rare orchid with an unusual habit of producing flowers which are unique and have visually very different markings despite being from the same spike. When this orchid blooms, you won't stop wondering which color will come forth next. The normal Phal speciosa variety tetraspis is generally white with light spots of purple.
