What You Need To Know About Blue Orchids
Temperature Considerations: Orchids require temperature fluctuation similar to those in nature. During the warm day, energy is converted to carbohydrates by the orchid and they're stored away for the night when the temperature drops. For ideal growth, the evening temperature should be between 60 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature below 60F risks damage to the orchid. Also, water that is too cold may also harm the orchid. Types of Blue Orchids: 1) Blue Vanda: This blue orchid was discovered in 1837 on the kashi hills of India. These orchids are usually 10-13 inches tall and have 4-6 flowers, which bloom for up to 4-5 weeks. Ideal cultivation condition is in cool air where there is consistent misting. Blue Vanda orchids are allergic to ethylene gas, so it is suggested to keep them away from fruits and vegetables. 2) Potted Dendrobium Indian Blue: This particular blue orchid is the most attractive of all. Its unique shades of deep purple blue are very appealing to many. For those that love royal colors, this orchid would be perfect. The plant is usually 2-3 feet tall and has 7-12 buds shipped in. It blooms to approximately 2.5 inches in diameter. This slim cane blue orchid is a favorite among many orchid growers. 3) Dendrobium: This highly revered blue orchid was used as a sacrifice to gods and the welcome of honorable guests in ancient civilizations. These blue orchids are capable of lasting weeks if the proper care is taken. This type of orchid will fit in anywhere in your home to liven up your home. Its rich and deep blue color produces a joyous atmosphere for your guests. 4) Sansai Blue Vanda Mokara: These blue orchids are a recent artificial creation; they are hybridized from the Indian blue Vanda. When this blue orchid blooms, the air is filled with the fragrance of wild berries. These orchids are very delicate and bloom specifically in the afternoon and early evening. This is just a sampling of existing blue orchids. There are far too many blue orchids to cover in such a short introduction. As the saying goes, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and there are many such who understand the value of these blue beauties.
