Orchid setups evolution – Final thoughts on seramis, pebbles, semi hydro

What started out as a joke, turned out to be quite the trip down memory lane to last year.

Around this time last year I was struggling with root tip damage.. still. I was very frustrated as I didn’t know the cause. I decided to change setups and resolved it, but it’s just now that I might understand what happened.

Clay pots and seramis are nice, but not for me and where I live. I need more moisture to keep my orchids happy. Furthermore these materials started damaging the root tips. But what about the leca?

Theoretically leca should not damage anything when dry… unless it’s very porous! it just so happens that I had a bad brand, which was very porous! thus the issues.

I am not 100% convinced.. but it is my best guess, that the source if my issues is porous clay in general. Now all is well.
