A good way to eradicate mites is to do so without damaging the environment and our health as much as possible, thus oils are the best alternative treatment against a mite infestation.. and it works! the problem is that they might affect plants too if used wrong.

A while back I developed a DIY mix based on paraffin oil, which you can see here which works very well for me as long as I make sure the oil concentration is small and evenly distributed.

Recently I tested a product based on canola oil, which you can see here This oil works in the same way, however it appears to be much heavier than paraffin, so heavy that it absolutely makes a sticky mess out of leaves and even damages them.

Mineral oil being light evaporates faster, but used excessively and it can be absorbed by orchids. So in the end it might depend on preference, but I believe mineral oil is indeed safer IF and only IF it is dispersed properly and is not excessive.
